Airborne Drones Will Soon Monitor Our Every Move


As the Times reports today, drones aren't just for indiscriminately killing foreign enemies and civilians anymore: real estate agents, feral hog-killers and Hollywood directors are all realizing the potential of unmanned aerial vehicles. Camera-equipped UAVs can cost as little as $300 and be controlled from an iPhone, and we're about to see a lot more of them. On Tuesday President Obama signed a law that forces the FAA to "allow police and first responders to fly drones under 4.4 pounds" at an altitude of under 400 feet. job: University of New Hampshire

The Earth Systems Research Center, University of New Hampshire (UNH) has an opening for a PhD student position in Remote Sensing and Coupled Natural and Human Systems starting in August 2012 (or as early as May 2012). This position carries a stipend of $23K/yr plus tuition and medical insurance. The PhD student will be responsible for the detection and monitoring of land-cover/land-use change (LCLUC) using satellite data (e.g., Landsat) and the linking of LCLUC data with physical (e.g., ecological, climate, hydrological) and socioeconomic data for the assessment of coupled natural and human systems. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team at the Earth Systems Research Center (http://www.csrc.sr.unh.edu/), Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space (EOS; http://www.eos.sr.unh.edu) at UNH, and will also have opportunities to work with collaborators at other institutions. Applicants should be enthusiastic, creative, and highly motivated. Experience in remote sensing, particularly image classification and LCLUC detection, is highly desirable.

AF, firms seek UAV flights in civil air space

A few U.S. companies are developing optionally piloted aircraft in the realization that it could be many years before unmanned planes are smart enough to replicate the ability of a human pilot to sense other air traffic and avoid it, a capability the Federal Aviation Administration is insisting upon before treating unmanned aircraft like traditional planes.
