IAI showcases 'Ghost' spy UAV in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Israel Aerospace Industries has unveiled its miniature Ghost unmanned aerial vehicle, a near-silent, 9-pound drone designed for clandestine special operations.
The device was displayed in the United States, where it is expected to be marketed soon.
The twin-rotor, vertical take-off UAV is optimized for operations in urban zones.
The mini-helicopter is so compact it can be carried in backpacks, with spare batteries and a computer, by two soldiers who control it from a laptop computer.
At 4.76 feet long and a rotor span of 2.46 feet, IAI boasts that the Ghost is small enough to fly into buildings through windows to provide real-time intelligence for Special Forces or company-size infantry units.
Its imaging capabilities, day and night, are enhanced by its ability to provide unique horizontal, or eye-level, visibility for ground forces that lookdown UAVs cannot, giving troops a more comprehensive view of their targets and operational environment.

pet tracking via mobile

Qualcomm sees market for pet tracking via mobile phones

A subsidiary will begin selling a pet tracking collar/system in September

Tagg, a pet tracking system from a Qualcomm subsidiary, can be attached to a pet's existing collar for GPS-based tracking and cell phone notification.
When Fluffy or Fido wander outside the fence, their owners will have a way to track the animals on mobile phones.
Next month, a wholly owned subsidiary of the San Diego wireless giant Qualcomm will launch Tagg — The Pet Tracker. The $200 system consists of a GPS tracker that clips to existing collars for dogs and cats. Pet owners set up a “Tagg Zone,” or a geo fence, for areas where it’s safe for their pets to play, such as their yard.
When pets venture beyond the zone, their owners will be notified and have the ability to follow their pets’ meanderings on their cell phones.
“It really puts the power into the (pet) owner’s hands,” said David Vigil, president of Snaptracs, the Qualcomm subsidiary behind Tagg. “You don’t have to put up signs anymore or call the shelter and hope the animal is there."
This isn’t a new idea. GPS-based pet tracking systems are available from Spotlight, Garmin and others with features and at prices similar to Tagg’s.

China Seeks UAV Capability

China was until the late 1990s content to follow Western unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developments and keep pace by copying or purchasing foreign technology. But when the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launched a modernization program in the late 1990s to prepare for possible conflict over Taiwan, development of unmanned systems became a priority. The result has been phenomenal growth in the UAV sector, which engages aircraft, helicopter, cruise missile and model aircraft companies, private concerns and university research centers.
At the third biennial Vanguard UAV exhibition in June 2010, 70 UAV-related companies displayed their wares, and at the November 2010 Zhuhai air show, 25 indigenous UAVs were shown. PLA ambitions for UAV development cover the gamut from micro to tactical to strategic, and could soon include stratospheric/near-space airships and hypersonic platforms.

New Tracking Technology Means You'll Never Lose Your Phone Or Laptop Again Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/new-tracking-technology-means-youll-never-lose-your-phone-or-laptop-again-2011-8#ixzz1Tt0HJSwh

Ever experienced that awful sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach and panic of reaching into your bag for your laptop or phone and finding nothing but empty space? Your mind starts racing immediately: Did I leave it at the office? Is it at home plugged into the charger? Is one of my coworkers a secret kleptomaniac? Nine times out of ten, you find your laptop or phone and all that speculation proves to be baseless. But sometimes it doesn’t turn up so easily, leaving you to worry about all of your personal information, photos and passwords falling into unscrupulous hands, not to mention the considerable cost of replacing the devices themselves.
Think about all of the time, effort and hassle one has to go through when it does happen. Aside from filing the police reports, you have to change all of your online passwords; alert your bank and other financial institutions of the theft and the fact that the financial information stored on your mobile device may have been compromised; alert your company IT Department to the theft and the fact that confidential company information may have been compromised; put a credit freeze on your credit cards; close and reopen new bank accounts; and worry where those family photos you had stored in there might end up as well as find and purchase a new device!  Each of these actions leads to a chain reaction of events and people in various organizations chasing down your data before it can be used against you or your company.  Hundreds of man-hours are burned and hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars lost and often the only thing gained is a few new grey hairs.
